How to Invent a Business in One Day

What is the #GoKart600?

This Friday, September 27th from 8 AM to 6 PM, the entire staff of GoKart Labs will be working under time and funding constraints to invent a business in 600 minutes.

At GoKart Labs, we have a process for innovation called Iteration Zero. Through this process, we typically take our clients from an idea to a long-term business plan in one month.

For the GoKart 600, we will be condensing Iteration Zero into one day.

Are you guys crazy?

Yes.

How are you using the $600?

Fuel, domain names, market research, fonts, photography – anything needed to forward the idea.

What is the idea?

Ideas were submitted over the last month. We had a vote and one has been chosen, but we’re not revealing it until Friday. We’ll be updating our FacebookTwitter (#GoKart600), and Instagram with statuses, fun photos, quotes, and creations from the day, so follow along to see it unfold.

How do you expect to get anything done in one day?

Thirty people working together for 10 hours is 37.5 typical working days. Like many businesses, we could choose to spread those hours across months of meetings and e-mails until no one remembers what the idea was in the first place.

It’s amazing what happens when structure meets deadline. You get done what you can with the time that you have.

Maybe a better question would be: How does anyone get anything done when they can’t focus for one entire day?

How do you schedule this day of controlled chaos?

First of all, we don’t know exactly what will happen, and we like it that way. We have a schedule. We’ve done two previous GoKart 600’s, and each time we’ve tweaked the process so everyone gets the most out of the day.

All that said, we’re most interested in what we can learn and how the day will make us better.

Everyone pushes outside their normal boundaries. There are small failures, teachable moments, big breakthroughs, and a constant collective boldness to push forward.

Remember that square-peg-round-hole scene in Apollo 13? The clock is ticking and they throw everything on the table and just figure out how to get that crew home. It will be like that, without lives at stake.

The day will end with pitch decks and presentations. Along the way, the experience will build empathy in our culture, an essential value for any person or company trying to create something useful in the world. But ultimately, there’s no exact science for innovation.

Not yet anyway.
